Weather intelligence for the future: Crafting a strategic enterprise approach to changing environmental conditions
Continue readingATLANTA – March 12, 2026 – The Weather Company, the world’s most accurate1 forecaster, today announced a multi-year renewal of its long-standing agreement with United Airlines to deliver advanced weather intelligence and real-time operational support. This agreement extends a collaboration of more than 15 years, ensuring United continues to leverage sophisticated weather intelligence and proprietary tools.
As weather remains the leading cause of FAA air traffic delays, United has taken the initiative to assemble a premier team of experts and integrate The Weather Company’s technology directly into the heart of its operations and decision-making process.
“Our highest priority is always the safety of our employees and passengers, and The Weather Company’s expertise is foundational to that mission,” said Nathan Polderman, senior manager of meteorology at United Airlines. “The integration of tools like Pilotbrief®, along with real-time insights from embedded meteorologists, enables us to stay at the forefront of aviation innovation, navigating complex weather challenges with industry-leading precision and accuracy.”
A Human-Centric, Data-Driven Operation
While no one can control the weather, the ability to predict it with high accuracy has advanced significantly. Central to this operation is the Embedded Meteorology program. Under the renewed agreement, The Weather Company will continue to provide that service to United, as well as a comprehensive suite of aviation solutions, including:
- Embedded Meteorological Services: Meteorologists from The Weather Company are embedded on-site 24/7 at United’s Network Operations Center (NOC), working shoulder-to-shoulder with United’s dispatchers and other key decision-makers, translating complex atmospheric data to support actionable operational decisions in real-time.
- Pilotbrief®: An interactive flight-deck tool that equips United pilots with high-resolution vertical profiles and turbulence forecasting to ensure smoother flights.
- Maverick WXAlert™: An automated cockpit alerting system that delivers real-time turbulence and hazard updates via the Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS), delivering critical safety data to pilots even when in-flight internet connectivity is limited.
- Next-Gen APIs: United is significantly expanding its use of aviation APIs, integrating various data feeds into its digital ecosystem to power everything from ramp safety alerts to the real-time radar maps shared with customers via the United app.
Decades of Accuracy and Insight
“Weather remains the most dynamic variable in aviation, and our mission is to help customers like United navigate that complexity with precision,” said Ravi Vanmali, senior vice president of aviation at The Weather Company. “By combining our high-resolution modeling and expertise of dedicated, embedded meteorologists, we help United actively manage their operation with tailored weather forecasts and insights. Beyond just providing data, we’re offering competitive advantage to help stay ahead of weather impacts and provide a safer, more reliable experience for passengers.”
As weather continues to impact operations, this strategic relationship allows United to mitigate the impact of weather by making more informed decisions around turbulence and route planning.
