Zooming in on weather forecast modeling

Standard global weather models often fail to capture the hyper-local conditions that can change rapidly. When forecasts miss the mark, it’s usually due to a lack of resolution.

Traditional global atmospheric models analyze the atmosphere in coarse grid squares of 10 kilometers or more. While effective for regional trends, that broad resolution frequently misses microclimates, localized convective storms, and sudden terrain-driven weather shifts.

In this brief overview, Dr. James Belanger breaks down the physics of weather modeling and explains how GRAF® (Global High-Resolution Atmospheric Forecast) closes the accuracy gap. By shrinking grid sizes to 3 kilometers, incorporating multiple inputs, and updating hourly, GRAF delivers the granular clarity enterprise operations need to make confident, time-critical decisions.

Have you ever checked the weather and seen a 75% chance of rain? Your street is dry, but your friend five miles away is getting soaked. When forecasts missed the mark, it almost always comes down to one thing. Resolution.

Think about zooming in on a map when you’re zoomed way out. Entire neighborhoods blur into a single colored dot. Zoom in close enough and you can see individual streets, parks, and buildings. It’s the same landscape, but with far more detail.

Weather forecasts work much the same way. Computer models simulate the atmosphere with complex math and physics, dividing the map into squares. And when those squares are too big, a thunderstorm can get lost in side one.

Many models use squares as large as 10 km wide. GRAF, our global high-resolution atmospheric forecast, shrinks those squares to just 3 km. That’s sharp enough to see individual thunderstorms. And it updates every hour, while the leading competitor updates every six.

GRAF is a key component in our technology stack that blends multiple inputs, making it superior to any single model on its own. Even ones built with AI. From weekend plans to enterprise-scale operations that detail matters.

Proprietary to the Weather Company, GRAF informs every forecast we deliver. Sharper detail. fresher updates. Better forecasts. That’s our science, simplified.
